Questions About Chiropractic
Who can benefit from chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care is for people of all ages—from children to seniors. Whether you're seeking pain relief, recovering from an injury, or simply want to maintain your overall health, chiropractic care can help. Fun Fact: Many professional sports teams, including all 32 NFL teams, have a chiropractor on their medical team to ensure players stay in optimal condition!
Why do I need to be consistent with chiropractic care?
Consistency is key when it comes to chiropractic care, especially in the beginning. When you first start care, your body needs time to “acclimate” and adjust to being properly aligned. The muscles, joints, and bones need to “relearn” their optimal positioning and function. Just like any new habit, regular adjustments help maintain and enhance the benefits over time, allowing for lasting relief and better overall health.
Is chiropractic a new thing?
Although chiropractic care has recently gained popularity, it has been around for over 100 years. The first chiropractic adjustment was performed in 1895. Since then, millions of people worldwide have experienced its benefits in promoting spinal health, pain relief, and overall wellness.
What causes the "popping" or "cracking" sound during adjustments?
The “popping” sound is simply joint cavitation, which is the release of gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide from the synovial fluid (the lubricating fluid within joints). This release of pressure brings an immediate sense of relief to the affected area. Think of it like opening a bottle of champagne—when the cork is removed, pressure is released, and you hear a popping sound.
What exactly is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a hands-on technique in which chiropractors use their hands (or small instruments) to apply controlled, specific force to a spinal joint. The goal of this procedure is to improve spinal motion and function. By restoring proper alignment, adjustments help your body function at its best, reducing pain and supporting overall health.
How does an adjustment affect my body?
When we perform an adjustment, we create a mechanical stimulus to the spinal joint or surrounding tissue, which triggers the body to respond by reducing pain and improving function. This mechanical stimulus helps block pain signals and enhances healing by promoting optimal movement.
Pain/chemical stimulus: This refers to anything that causes pain—such as inflammation from an injury, a herniated disc, or a pinched nerve. When the body is in pain, it sends chemical signals (such as prostaglandins) that promote discomfort and irritation.
Mechanical stimulus: This refers to physical forces like chiropractic adjustments, massage therapy, exercise, or ultrasound that promote healing by improving tissue function and reducing pain signals.
Your body is your most valuable asset. Chiropractic care isn’t just about pain relief—it’s an investment in your long-term health. Whether recovering from an injury, alleviating chronic pain, or maintaining overall well-being, chiropractic care supports your body’s natural ability to heal and stay strong.
